A group of seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
